Keeping bearded dragons: profile and care

The beginner's classic – UVB is essential

At a glance

  • Adult size: up to 60 cm
  • Origin: Australia
  • Suitable for beginners: yes – an ideal choice for newcomers

The right vivarium

At least 150 x 60 x 60 cm with climbing opportunities, hides, a suitable substrate and a basking spot.

Temperature, lighting & climate

  • Daytime around 35 °C in the basking area and around 25 °C in the cooler area
  • Night-time around 20–23 °C
  • UVB lighting is essential – for vitamin D3 production and bone health

Feeding

Omnivorous: juveniles eat mainly animal protein daily, while plant matter dominates as they mature. Do not forget the necessary supplements.

Temperament & handling

Good-natured and diurnal, changing colour with mood and surroundings. A very rewarding animal to observe.

Without adequate UVB lighting, bearded dragons are at risk of serious bone disease. A UVB lamp is essential, not optional.
