Which snake is right for a beginner?
The best beginner snakes at a glance
Good beginner snakes
- Corn snake: hardy and easy to care for, around 120–150 cm – the classic choice.
- Royal python: calm and compact (1.2–1.5 m), undemanding.
- Kingsnake: a good choice with some basic experience – must be housed alone.
- Hognose snake: small (60–90 cm) and fascinating to watch (mildly venomous, harmless to people).
Not for beginners
Large constrictors such as boa constrictors, Burmese pythons and reticulated pythons belong in experienced hands only, because of their size and strength.
Whichever snake you choose, look at its adult size, space requirements and the need to feed frozen-thawed food. You will find the details in our individual care articles.
