Keeping monitor lizards: profile and care

From small species to giants

At a glance

  • Adult size: 60–90 cm (Ackie monitor) up to 3 m (water monitor), depending on species
  • Suitable for beginners: smaller species with some experience – large monitors, no
  • Notable: highly intelligent and active

The right vivarium

Very much species-dependent: Ackie monitors from 150 x 80 x 80 cm, water monitors at least 300 x 150 x 150 cm. Always with climbing branches, hides and a large water container, which is indispensable.

Temperature, lighting & climate

  • Daytime 28–35 °C, with a warm spot up to 40 °C
  • Night-time 20–25 °C
  • Humidity 50–80 % depending on species
  • Lighting that supports vitamin D3 synthesis

Feeding

Carnivorous: small mammals, insects and the occasional egg – as frozen-thawed food and livefood.

Temperament & handling

Intelligent, active and inquisitive – monitors need plenty of space, patience and regular enrichment.

Large monitors such as the water monitor reach up to 3 m and are not suitable for keepers with limited experience.
