The right vivarium
Very much species-dependent: Ackie monitors from 150 x 80 x 80 cm, water monitors at least 300 x 150 x 150 cm. Always with climbing branches, hides and a large water container, which is indispensable.
Temperature, lighting & climate
- Daytime 28–35 °C, with a warm spot up to 40 °C
- Night-time 20–25 °C
- Humidity 50–80 % depending on species
- Lighting that supports vitamin D3 synthesis
Feeding
Carnivorous: small mammals, insects and the occasional egg – as frozen-thawed food and livefood.
Temperament & handling
Intelligent, active and inquisitive – monitors need plenty of space, patience and regular enrichment.
Large monitors such as the water monitor reach up to 3 m and are not suitable for keepers with limited experience.
