Keeping boa constrictors: profile and care
For experienced keepers – size, climate and feeding
At a glance
- Adult size: 120 to over 300 cm depending on subspecies (males usually smaller)
- Origin: Central and South America
- Suitable for beginners: no – their size means experience is required
- Lifespan: 20–30 years
The right vivarium
At least 180 x 80 x 80 cm for adults, and larger for bigger specimens. With a robust substrate such as bark chippings, sturdy climbing branches, hides and a water container large enough to bathe in.
Temperature, lighting & climate
- Daytime 28–32 °C, basking spot up to 35 °C
- Night-time 22–25 °C
- Humidity around 60–75 %, slightly higher for some subspecies
- Heat lamp, UVB lighting and a thermostat-controlled heat mat
Feeding
Frozen-thawed food such as rats or rabbits: juveniles every 10–14 days, adults roughly every 3–4 weeks. Avoid overfeeding, as boas put on weight easily.
Temperament & handling
A calm temperament, active around dusk and at night, and generally not aggressive. Powerful nonetheless, so handle with respect – not an animal for children.
Because of their size, boa constrictors are not suitable for beginners.
