Keeping chameleons: profile and care
Demanding – a tall vivarium and UVB are essential
At a glance
- Adult size: panther chameleons around 35–50 cm; veiled chameleons often larger
- Suitable for beginners: with reservations – the hardy veiled chameleon is the most suitable
- Type: tall vivarium, arboreal
The right vivarium
For a panther chameleon at least 60 x 60 x 120 cm, well ventilated with plenty of climbing opportunities and plants for cover.
Temperature, lighting & climate
- Daytime 24–30 °C depending on species, with a warmer basking area
- Night-time around 20 °C
- UVB lighting is essential
- Adequate humidity, usually maintained by misting
Feeding
Insectivorous: crickets, locusts and other insects, dusted with vitamins and minerals.
Temperament & handling
Calm and very much an animal to observe – chameleons do not enjoy frequent handling.
Chameleons need careful attention to temperature, humidity and diet. UVB is essential, and a well-ventilated vivarium is important.
