Thawing, storing and offering frozen food

Thawing, storing and offering – the key rules

Thawing correctly

  1. Thaw the prey item at room temperature in a sealed bag.
  2. Then warm it in the sealed bag in warm water to body temperature (around 36 °C) – this preserves its natural appearance and scent.
  3. Offer it with feeding tongs or tweezers, moving it gently from side to side to trigger the feeding response.

Never thaw prey in the microwave, and never refreeze food that has been thawed.

Storing correctly

  • Store at a minimum of -18 °C, ideally in a separate freezer.
  • Optimal storage time: 6 to 12 months.
  • For hygiene reasons, do not handle prey items with bare hands.

How often to feed

  • Juveniles: roughly every 5 to 7 days
  • Adult snakes: roughly every 10 to 14 days

Is your animal refusing frozen food? Warm it thoroughly and dry in the bag to body temperature and offer it at night, when the snake is active.

Under German animal welfare law, live rodents may only be fed in exceptional cases, and we do not ship them. Frozen food is the correct standard.
