The right vivarium
At least 80 x 40 x 40 cm with a soil-based substrate, hides and stable climbing opportunities.
Temperature, lighting & climate
- Daytime 25–28 °C, with a warm spot up to 32 °C
- Night-time around 20 °C
- Humidity 40–60 %
- UVB lighting is not essential, but can benefit general health
Feeding
Small mammals such as mice as frozen-thawed food, occasionally amphibians. Supplement with vitamins and minerals.
Temperament & handling
A friendly temperament, plenty of burrowing and the famous habit of playing dead when threatened.
The hognose is a mildly venomous rear-fanged snake. Its venom is generally harmless to people, but sensitive individuals should take care to handle it safely and avoid bites.
