Lamp buzzing or whining – is that normal?
Screwing it in tightly usually helps – some noise is normal
Where the noise comes from
Whining noises are caused by high-frequency vibration when a component is not sitting completely tight. UV metal halide lamps are high-pressure discharge lamps, and their ballasts draw a lot of power, especially at start-up.
Always unplug the unit from the mains before doing anything! Do not carry out electrical installation work yourself – that is a job for qualified professionals.
What you can do
- Switch the system off and let it cool down.
- Screw the bulb back in firmly, all the way to the stop (without forcing it) – this alone is often enough.
- Check that the plug connection, reflector and retaining ring on the holder are all properly seated.
A certain amount of background noise is normal with this type of lamp and can never be eliminated entirely. During the first few days of use it usually reduces noticeably.
