Keeping reticulated pythons: profile and care

One of the world's largest snakes – experts only

At a glance

  • Adult size: 4 to over 6 m, exceptionally more than 7 m; 20–75 kg
  • Origin: South East Asia
  • Suitable for beginners: no – not a reptile for newcomers
  • Lifespan: up to 25 years

The right vivarium

The legally required minimum size is based on the animal's body length (a factor of 0.7 x 0.5 x 0.5 times body length for length x width x height). With large hides, sturdy climbing structures, a spacious water bowl for bathing, a thermostat and hygrometer, plus misting or a fogger.

Temperature, lighting & climate

  • Temperature zones between 28 °C and 35 °C
  • Humidity 60–80 %

Feeding

In captivity, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits as frozen-thawed food. Intervals depend on age and size. Overfeeding leads to obesity.

Temperament & handling

Intelligent and inquisitive, active around dusk and at night. Non-venomous, killing prey by constriction – more demanding and less predictable than a Burmese python.

The reticulated python is one of the largest snakes in the world and is not a reptile for beginners.
