Using and caring for vivarium moss
Holding moisture and supporting shedding
What moss does in the vivarium
Moss holds moisture, stabilises the microclimate and supports shedding. It is particularly suited to tropical, humidity-loving species such as chameleons, frogs and rainforest dwellers.
- Thick moss: highly absorbent and robust, used as substrate or in damp areas, and good for burrowing animals.
- Ball moss: decorative, for accents on rocks and branches.
Use and care
- Dampen the moss lightly before putting it in.
- Spread it on the substrate or tuck it into damp corners and crevices.
- Mist it daily (more often if needed) – evenly damp, but never waterlogged.
Avoid standing water in the moss, as this leads to rot. And bear in mind that a fogger is not suitable for every reptile species.
